We recently came across an article that was published on October 10, 2023, by USA TODAY that discusses how scientists are using CRISPR gene editing to create chickens that are partially resistant to bird flu. While we acknowledge that this could be seen as a step forward in combatting the devastating effects of bird flu on poultry, we want to share our thoughts and concerns regarding this development.

The Ethical Standpoint

Firstly, let us reaffirm our commitment to non-GMO, regenerative farming practices that focus on the well-being of our animals and the environment. Our chickens live in the open, on clean pastures, with fresh air and sunlight – a natural lifestyle that we believe contributes to their overall health and well-being. In line with our core values, we will not be participating in any gene-editing experimentation on our farm.

Biosecurity vs. Gene Editing

Biosecurity and healthy living conditions are primary concerns for any ethical farm. It is these measures, along with a well-rounded diet and medical care, that can usually prevent or contain outbreaks like bird flu. We believe that maintaining our existing biosecurity protocols, as well as our commitment to ethical and natural farming, serve as the best "defense" against diseases.

Possible Unintended Consequences

The article points out that experts warn of unintended consequences, which is one of our significant concerns as well. Even a slight change in the gene pool could produce unexpected and potentially negative results, not just for the chickens but for the entire ecosystem in which they live.

The Unknowns of Consuming Gene-Edited Chicken

While there may be immediate benefits to flu-resistant chickens, the long-term impacts on human health remain largely unknown. Our commitment is to provide you with foods that are as close to their natural state as possible – a commitment that rules out gene-edited animals for us.

Our Promise to You

We remain committed to:

  • Preserving the land
  • Being responsible stewards
  • Contributing to our community
  • Establishing unwavering trust
  • Nurturing the well-being of others

In summary, while the science of gene editing may promise solutions to some very complex problems, it also raises ethical and ecological questions that are in direct conflict with our values at Pure Pasture Farms. Our priority remains offering you premium, sustainably raised meats and seafood that are ethically and naturally sourced.

We want to thank you for your continued support and trust in us. As always, we welcome any questions or concerns you might have.

Best wishes,

The Farmers at Pure Pasture Farms

P.S. Eat with confidence, knowing that we are committed to environmentally responsible animal farming, offering you high-quality meats and dairy that benefit both you and the Earth.

The Implications of GMO Expansion and the Importance of Regenerative Agriculture

In this post, we dive into the critical issues surrounding the expansion of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), focusing on the recent introduction of the GM Purple Tomato. We express our concerns about the potential environmental and health impacts of GMOs, particularly regarding cross-pollination risks, unforeseen health effects, and their compatibility with regenerative farming principles. Highlighting the need for stricter regulations, enhanced consumer education, and stronger support for traditional farming practices, we call on stakeholders to advocate for an agricultural approach that prioritizes ecosystem health and sustainability. Join us at Pure Pasture Farms in our mission to protect and nurture our planet through regenerative agriculture.

The Truth About Harmful Residues in Factory Farm Eggs

In summary, our blog post highlights the potential presence of harmful residues in factory farm eggs, which can have negative effects on human health. These residues include antibiotics, pesticides, and other chemicals that can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, increased risk of cancer, and other diseases. We also discuss the benefits of choosing pasture-raised eggs, which are not only more nutritious but also free from harmful residues. By making the switch to Pure Pasture Farms, you can ensure the safety and quality of your eggs while supporting ethical and sustainable farming practices.
